Statement on the Resolution to Boycott Arizona and Arizona-Based Businesses

The Resolution to Boycott Arizona and Arizona-Based Businesses was in response to the Arizona Law Chapter 113, otherwise known as SB 1070.  SB 1070 is a law that leads to racial profiling, which is a civil liberties issue.

The Resolution will not harm Cook County financially. The resolution strictly states,”…Cook County Departments refrain from, to the extent practicable, and in instances where there is no significant cost to the County nor conflict with the law…”,  which in its entirety says that we will look at each new existing and/or renewable contract on a case by case basis.  We do not intend to arbitrarily, across the board, eliminate, cancel or even consider contracts, based solely from Arizona.

Multiple top law enforcement officers across the country, including Arizona, denounce SB 1070.  While the law does not address the problem that there is no definition of what will constitute “reasonable suspicion”.  ” I support enforcing all applicable laws where probable cause to arrest or detain is warranted.”  Commissioner Edwin Reyes stated.

The resolution to boycott Arizona and Arizona based-businesses will be repealed once SB 1070 is repealed or invalidated.
